I have been advised that 足元をすくう, while more common, is incorrect and should be 足をすくう. This is confirmed from several sources. I think it's best not to have errors immortalized here, so I have changed it.

By the way, wouldn't it be closer to the English to say ～足(元)をすくおうとする?
Good idea. I'll switch to that, and I'll reinstate the 足元を... It's common enough to get a mention here.
I think 足元をすくう is a bit like the English "batten down the hatches". The correct term is "batten the hatches", and the former is basically meaningless; you can't actually batten them down, but it's what everyone says.
