später ≠ late => later

wenn man nur die vokabel betrachtet, stimmt das wohl, aber eben wegen sowas ist tatoeba ja für sätze gedacht. "zu spät" oder "später" sind die einzigen natürlich klingenden möglichkeiten für diesen satz.

I can't quite see by which miracle an adjective could translate into a comparative...

Dieses Wunder nennt sich "Sprachgebrauch". Mit "spät" würde der Satz sehr unnatürlich klingen.

Übrigens gibt's das auch umgekehrt im Deutschen. Der Satz "Ein älterer Mann saß auf einer Bank." würde wohl mit "An old man was sitting on a bench." oder "A slightly old man..." oder ähnlich übersetzt werden. Wundersamerweise ist ein "älterer Mann" im Deutschen nämlich jünger als ein "alter Mann".

an "older man" also exists in English, so that would translate perfectly...No need to match the wrong pairs...

I know it exists, but can "an older man" in English mean "a slightly old man" and would it be understood as someone not yet really old, as it is in German?

In German it's like this: when I speak about someone in his sixties, I might say "ein älterer Mann", but when he's like 80+, I might already call him "ein alter Mann" (the former sounds more polite). These things shouldn't be translated literally, so there's no matching of wrong pairs.

In this case here, "late" is correctly translated as "später".
