"live on" seems a little strong for me. From WP:"主食（しゅしょく）とは、食事の中心として主要なエネルギー供給源になる食物のこと"

daijs:日常の食事で、主となる食べ物。

Maybe "main food". The Spanish says "The Japanese's basic diet consists of rice and fish."

I'll add some alternatives.
