Sal' vortarulo!
Have you noticed the big discrepancy between the sentences of this thread? Incredible. How can there be such a big difference?!

Hehe, yes, I know. :)
It was on purpose, because in Klingon, "wej" can mean both "three" (as a numeral) and "not yet". Plural marking is not obligatory in Klingon either, so this gives a very funny and interesting ambiguity.

I see. So, you authored this discrepancy on purpose...
Naughty you...! ;)

Vortarulo Vortarulo December 9, 2011 December 9, 2011 at 10:29:28 PM UTC link Permalink

P.S.: Even more discrepancies would be possible:
"wej" = 1) three; 2) not yet
"'uQ" = dinner
"poQ" = demand, require

The third person marking is a zero morpheme, that's why I included "he" and "she" as possible translations, too. "It" is possible as well.
Additionally, Klingon doesn't have tense (only aspect), so the sentence could also mean "He/she/it orders/ordered/will order...".

And yes, one could use "demand" or "require" as the verb too, of course. So...

3 different persons, 3 possible translations for the verb, 3 possible standard tenses and 2 possible intepretations of "wej", makes 54 plausible translations in any English-like language (like German and Esperanto). That's not counting definiteness (which is not marked in Klingon), which could yield over a 100 different sentences in just one language.

I've decided that these few are enough. :)

Amazing!
It seems obvious that Klingon was made/destined for linguistics fanatics... ;-)

Mi petas vin diri al mi klare kaj rekte;
ĉu mi ricevos vespermanĝon aŭ ne???
;-)

wej :)

GrizaLeono GrizaLeono June 5, 2014 June 5, 2014 at 2:20:36 PM UTC link Permalink
