En España y en zonas de Hispanoamérica se emplean los nombres cobayo y cobaya, posiblemente derivados del idioma tupí sabúia. En muchos países recibe el nombre de conejillo de Indias, en la región rioplatense es llamado chanchito de Indias, mientras que en el resto de la Argentina se usa la palabra cuis o cobayo.
