"What do you learn English for?" is a bit of an awkward formation for the question and makes me wonder if the translation came from a machine or a non-native speaker. I added a couple of variants to it.

Ne demek istediğini anlamaya çalışıyorum ama anlamıyorum. Ben bir makine değilim ve Türkçe benim ana dilim. Çevirilerimi eleştirirken biraz daha yumuşak olabilirsin. Bu cümle farklı şekillerde çevrilebilir. İtalyanlar gibi her cümleye bir sürü çeviri yapmamı mı bekliyorsun? Üzgünüm o kadar çok zamanım yok.

I was correcting the English, not the Turkish. I'm kind of new to Tatoeba, so if I wound up offending you, it was not intended. However, I have read the "Quick Start" page and on it, it says:

The 2 Ways You Can Be the Most Helpful

1.You can translate from a foreign language you know into your own native language or strongest language.

2.You can create natural-sounding sentences in your own native language for others to translate into their native languages.

********************************
So, I am working off of the assumption that when I see an English sentence, it has been written by either a native speaker or one who is fluent in the language. From your message I now know that you are translating from Turkish (your native tongue) into your strongest language (English).

I also now know a real live person wrote it (unless you're a machine posing as a human!). I've heard machines can now do some pretty amazing things so I don't rule anything out anymore. In my defense, when I looked at the log, the first entry read "date unknown" and no user name was listed with it. In fact, I don't even see your log until I get to the bottom of the list.

Regardless, my apologies if I was too harsh with my criticism. It really was not directed at you and was not written with any ill will nor was it meant to be disrespectful.

@LB
The English sentence wasn't written by duran. The last line in the logs says "duran.. linked to #..", which means duran provided a translation (in Turkish).

Thank you so much for contributing to this conversation. What a great resource Tatoeba is! It really helps unravel some mysteries one may have about a foreign language. I hope any contributions I make to this program, now or in the future, help further its ability to benefit students of foreign languages around the world. Immediate, helpful tips from people like you certainly help!
