According to the Google Japanese n-grams, 雲の影 is about 3 times more common than 雲の陰. Did the sentence need changing? Or do Japanese people just commonly use the "wrong" kanji?

According to the advice from contacts in Google, the counts on the search pages are not to be trusted. Although from 2007, the n-gram counts are much better.

Strictly speaking, "雲の影" means "the shadow of a cloud on objects," and "雲の陰" means "behind the clouds."
