I was wondering if the word 'ülke' can be used for 'countryside' as well?

"country" may mean both "kırsal" and "ülke" but "countryside" means only "kırsal" or "taşra".
"ülke" can't be used for "countryside". :)

The reason I'm asking is because the word in the English sentence 'the country' is specific and refers to the countryside and not the literal meaning of the word 'country'. Obviously the father is living in 'a country' but specifically in 'the country' meaning countryside. Should it perhaps be 'kırsal' or 'taşra' in this case?

Country means " kırsal and ülke. Some of translators say "kırsal" some say "ülke" You can choose one of them. It's up to you.

I don't think this is the kind of a sentence a native speaker could form.

- to live in the country = <kırsal kesimde>/<köyde> yaşamak
- ülke = a state, a country (like Germany, Turkey etc.)

Bu cümledeki sorun sadece hatalı çevrilmiş olması değil, aynı zamanda tek başına da pek anlamlı olmaması. Cümle sadece bu kelimeyle kullanılacaksa bir sıfat (bu, o, başka vs.) eklemek gerekiyor. Bu şekilde çok tuhaf. Birinin 'ülkede' yaşamaması için Antarktika'da (gerçi bazı ülkeler orayı bile parsellemiş), okyanustaki uluslararası sularda ya da uzayda falan olması lazım. Cümleyi silmeyip değiştirdim. Başka alternatif çeviriler de varmış zaten. Enteresan bir tartışma olduğu için yorumların da silinmesini istemiyorum. İbret ve hatıra olarak kalmaları daha iyi.

I should maybe motivate my former request a little bit: It makes sense to refer to "the country" in this way, but only if there is a context where "the country" refers to an actual country previously mentioned:

- How come you've been to Angola?
- Well, my father lives in the country (i.e Angola), so that's why.

In all other cases "the country" refers to "the countryside", so thanks for changing the sentence.

Thanks for the example, but even in this context, saying 'babam ülkede yaşıyor' would sound strange. An adjective (o/bu) is still necessary.
