Annotation: a Jewish prayer.

Not a sentence. Maybe, "I am blessed". If it's a prayer, maybe it's all right.

The "complete" sentence is:
Blessed [are You, Lord almighty] for not making me a woman.

The problem with the English is that it doesn't read as an elliptical sentence: it reads as nonsense. Based on what your report, I should say, "Bless you for ...," which is exactly how Hayastan translates it into Spanish.

I just adapted the Prayer Book:
"Blessed art thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who hast not made me a woman."

But the adaptation broke the English. "Blessed" is an adjective. It modifies "thou, ...." When you leave out "art thou," there's nothing left for "blessed" to modify. The poor reader tries "blessed me," "blessed woman"; and ends up with "I can't figure this blessed thing out."

Why don’t you use the unadapted version? ☺

OK, yet suggest first to rewrite the other translations.

This has been here since 2012.

>Blessed for not making me a woman.

Now that we have a correct form of this, perhaps we should delete this incorrect one.

Blessed You, our God, King of the world, for not making me a woman.

I prefer the Turkish translation which is more along the lines of:
I am thankful for my not being a woman.

Need help, how to delete a sentence?

Pfirsichbaeumchen Pfirsichbaeumchen August 28, 2016 August 28, 2016 at 1:44:48 AM UTC link Permalink

If you want this sentence deleted, I can do that for you.

MrShoval MrShoval August 28, 2016 August 28, 2016 at 5:32:18 AM UTC link Permalink

Hi Pfirsichbaeumchen
Yes, please delete this one:
Blessed for not making me a woman.

DostKaplan DostKaplan August 28, 2016 August 28, 2016 at 5:39:16 AM UTC link Permalink

Shouldn't it be edited/corrected instead of deleted? Either way, the remaining English sentence:

"Blessed You, our God, King of the world, for not making me a woman."

doesn't match the Turkish sentence:

"Bir kadın olmadığım için şükrediyorum."'

(I don't know what the translations are in other languages, if any, as I have permanently set my settings to English-->Turkish and Turkish-->English only.)

As I said before, I like the Turkish translation, regardless, as it would be something one could likely say in real life: "I am thankful for my not being a woman."

DostKaplan DostKaplan August 28, 2016 August 28, 2016 at 5:43:22 AM UTC link Permalink

And, by the way, the other English sentence isn't correct:

"Blessed You, our God, King of the world, for not making me a woman."

It probably should be "Blessed ARE You..." or "May You be blessed...."
