Se rendre = aller

je vais là = j'y vais = je m'y rends

Se rendre nécessite une destination => y = là

In German or English, the destination of gehen/go is often implicit (it's the one we were talking about in the former sentence...)
In French, it is never implicit. French uses "y" to refer to the destination we were talking about.

Tokyo seems very interesting. I would like to go.
