I adopted this sentence. And I changed it.
I removed "私は".

Removing those 私は is fine.
It seems to me that “hardly” is not in this sentence. Should we unlink it from the English?
Two comments:
(a) I think the English is OK as a translation of the Japanese. "couldn't resist" would be more literal.
(b) the Japanese sentence is included in the longer sentence at https://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/212771 (そのパーティーでの彼のふるまいはあまりにこっけいだったので、私は笑いをこらえることができなかった。) For that reason I will probably remove this pair from the set used for dictionary examples as there is no reason to include exact duplicates.
