    shouldn't it be tomodachi mo imasen, not arimasen?

    Short answer - possibly. Technically I think ある may be used for the existence/non-existence of people.

    c.f. example from スーパー大辞林

    昔々，ある所におじいさんとおばあさんがありました。

    But いました would still be more common.
