How come it still didn't exist in the Tatoeba reservoir?
Anyhow, I've just added it, and I hope we can add counterparts in as many other languages as possible.

Ĵus afiŝinte tiun ĉi frazon en la germana, mi esperas, ke ni povas trovi ĝiajn kongruajn variantojn en kiel eble plej multaj lingvoj :)

Eldad Eldad June 13, 2012 June 13, 2012 at 11:23:25 PM UTC link Permalink

I found it in Tatoeba with a little addition. I guess we can also have this sentence on its own, without any extra words.

Jes, we can! :) Ja, das können wir.

Feliz cumpleaños?

No descifro muy bien el significado de la frase en esperanto. Y en aleman menos....

Shishir Shishir June 13, 2012 June 13, 2012 at 11:40:35 PM UTC link Permalink

but shouldn't these sentences be linked to this thread?

http://tatoeba.org/spa/sentences/show/404606

Sí, feliz cumpleaños ^^

Eldad Eldad June 13, 2012 June 13, 2012 at 11:50:23 PM UTC link Permalink

Well, it's another variant of this kind. It wasn't there per se (I only found it with Muiriel :)).

Eldad Eldad June 13, 2012 June 13, 2012 at 11:51:31 PM UTC link Permalink

And I'm not sure it's the same as "Feliz cumpleaños", or "Happy birthday". Alex, is it really the same as "Happy birthday"?

wallebot wallebot June 13, 2012 June 13, 2012 at 11:52:05 PM UTC link Permalink

Sorry by unlink. I think its repaired.

Si os preguntais como ha podido ocurrir, he arrastrado la tijerita a la barra de direcciones y la he liado.

Teoricamente este link uniria la frase con la que ha puesto shishir.

Si lo creeis adecuado usadlo.

I always thought "Alles Gute zum Geburststag" was the same thing as happy birthday,... but if you see some difference, I'll be more than glad to learn something :P

Shishir Shishir June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 12:01:22 AM UTC link Permalink

@wallebot: vamos a esperar a ver qué dice Alexander, que Eldad piensa que no son exactamente lo mismo "feliz cumpleaños" y "Alles Gute zum Geburtstag", y mi alemán no es lo suficientemente bueno para estar segura al 100% :P

Eldad Eldad June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 12:28:00 AM UTC link Permalink

Yes, I wish to see what Alexander will say. As a matter of fact, it's pretty similar to "feliz cumpleaños", but I believe it's not exactly the same. As Alexander also speaks Spanish, it will be interesting to see what he thinks.

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 1:01:30 AM UTC link Permalink

If your question is, whether "Herzlichen Glückwunsch" and "Alles Gute" are equivalents or not, I have to say they are not. I recommend to disconnect "Alles Gute..." together with "Ĉion bonan...".

I wouldn't see a "feliz cumpleaños" and "Alles Gute zum Geburtstag" as really good match either, but there's an online dictionary who tells us so, and so I should be silent. :)

The bottom line may be that these expressions are quite different, if we look at the meaning of the words, but that they are used in exactly the same situation (where often the formal kindness is more important than the meaning of the words used).

Eldad Eldad June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 1:36:08 AM UTC link Permalink

I didn't connect them - it was wallebot who linked all of them. I opened "Alles Gute..." as a separate sentence, not linked to any of the existing ones.

So, "Happy birthday" is nevertheless referred to as equivalent to "Alles Gute..."? Interesting...

Shishir Shishir June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 2:04:08 AM UTC link Permalink

but what's the difference between Alles Gute zum Geburtstag and feliz cumpleaños?

Shishir Shishir June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 2:04:44 AM UTC link Permalink

I mean, the difference you feel as a native speaker of German with a good command of Spanish.

al_ex_an_der al_ex_an_der June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 2:45:58 AM UTC link Permalink

If we wouldn't speak the shortened formula

"Alles Gute zum Geburtstag", but express explicitely the whole meaning behind this would be something like

on the occasion of your birthday I wish you all the good things one can wish

Now its your turn - as a native speaker of Spanish - to say what is the (complete) "meaning behind" (or the associations you link with)

feliz cumpleaños

(Even if this question may seem to you to simple, I'm interested in your answer).

Shishir Shishir June 14, 2012 June 14, 2012 at 3:46:30 PM UTC link Permalink

Oh I see... I think in Spanish we just mean "have a happy day", but now that you mention it, I've never thought about it. I guess the most similar thing then would be "te deseo lo mejor", but we rarely use it for birthdays. I'm going to ask wallebot, maybe he can help.

@Wallebot: ¿sabes más fórmulas de estas que se dicen para desearle a alguien un feliz cumpleaños que signifiquen algo más que "que tengas un feliz día de cumpleaños"? Es que según me dice Alexander, el "Alles Gute zum Geburtstag" significaría algo así como "te deseo todo lo mejor que se pueda desear por tu cumpleaños", ¿en español tenemos algo así que realmente se use en los cumpleaños?
