Wouldn't the perfective прочитал make more sense here? It seems to me that the sentence implies that the book was read in full.
"Читал" can also imply that the book was read in full. It doesn't necessary mean "I was reading".
Ok, I won't pretend that I know any better. One day I'll get russian verb aspects right...
