[eng] the German and English translations look totally different...

Jes, vi pravas, ke la angla frazo malsamas de la germanaj. Tradukinte la japonan frazon pli malpli laŭvorte, mi provis aldoni ankaŭ proverbon originale germanan, sed tute malatentis la anglan frazon. Eble mi provu traduki ĝin ankaŭ.

I've added a more literal English equivalent of this Japanese expression. It's more like the German "Die Sense glänzt, mit der gemäht wird."

I did consider "A sickle that gets used shines" but it felt clumsy having two adjacent verbs. On reflection I think it's OK and it certainly aligns with the Japanese.

The correct proverb should be 使っている鍬は光る

Yes, 使っている鍬は光る is the more usual ことわざ, but we shouldn't change this one as most of the other sentences are using sickle rather than hoe. It could be added as a new sentence.
