The Japanese sentence in question means: "Don't get hung up on the details." You may want to check with a native Japanese speaker, but my sense is that the listener is not trying to "split hairs." They are just obsessing over every little detail when they don't need to. I don't think this Japanese really matches the English because there is no type of fine distinction being made here, just over-attention to detail.
