I didn't think it was all that wrong. Change 'it' to 'this cellar' and it's perfect.

You’d have to change the Japanese sentence, because it was translated from the English one and not the other way round.

I thought it was taken from a bilingual reader or something. One of the original Tanaka corpus sentences, origins murky. It was just missing context to tell that 'It' didn't refer to the weather.

This is not necessarily true.

With the sentences imported from the Tanaka Corpus, lower-numbered sentences aren't necessarily the originals.

The "I was in" part isn't in the Japanese sentence, by the way.
