This sentence was added as a translation of "We parted the best of friends." In that sentence, "parted" is always meant intransitively, meaning that the speaker and the other person being spoken about left each other peacefully and remained close friends. But I suppose the sentence could also lend itself to an interpretation in which "parted" is meant transtiively, along the lines of "They were the best of friends, but we separated them." Is this the meaning of the current German sentence?

Hi, Alan. Yes, the German sentence means that "we" separated two other people, who were the best of friends. It can't have the first meaning you mention.
