A small clarification:
- the USSR collapsed in 1991, not in 1993;
- there was no communism in the USSR, there was socialism.

Tag this as a lie! xD
Mar 19th 2014, 06:15
I have no right to add tags :)

It's not a "lie" unless it's an untruth intended to mislead. My guess is that it's a simple error.

I adopted the sentence since the English is good.

It wouldn't bother me to change it if everyone who has a translation agrees.

However, that would perhaps violate one of TRANG's rules. I'm not sure.

It's up to you.

By the way, if I write something like "The USA was founded in 1900, and there was communism for many years" in my native language, will you consider it as a good sentence?
Mar 19th 2014, 07:45
Well, an "untruth" if it matters. I think it should be tagged like that to avoid confusion.

There are good English sentences in the Tatoeba Corpus for me to use in my projects without spending time debating this type of thing.

I've removed the OK tag and my other tags and unadopted this.

In the same amount of time it'll take me to deal with this, I can contribute a lot of other good English sentences for people to translate.

I'll let someone else deal with it.

Tagging this "false" doesn't really take care of the problem with all the projects using the Tatoeba Corpus.
I think I'm perhaps the only person using the Corpus that takes the time to filter out bad sentences.
Most people either think there are no errors in the Tatoeba Corpus, or they don't think it's important.
Most people seem to just grab the sentences.csv file and create their material from there.

Try this search to get an idea of what I mean.

I understand, but anyway it's better if we put the tag than nothing. Also, in addition to grammar, Tatoeba is a quite informative and interesting so at least here we can mark some obvious errors and myths.
Mar 19th 2014, 09:39
I think, we all should care not only about that sentences on Tatoeba were grammatically correct, but they were meaningful and true. So, if we see any ignorance of fact here, it would be better to correct it as soon as possible.

But if it's impossible for some reasons, adding tag may be a partial solution. So, I suggest to add this tag to the rest translation of this sentence.

I agree with you about that, which is one reason I've removed this sentence from the list of sentences I will use.

However, before you started here, there were several heated discussions about this kind of thing.
If I remember correctly, TRANG, the project's boss, said untrue sentences were acceptable.
(I could be wrong about her saying that.)

Note that we have quite a few bad sentences that are hard to remove because of personal feelings of members involved, and none of the admins seems to be willing to just go in and delete such things.

Here's one example, but there are quite a few others.

I agree with the last commentator there.
