Normally, accents nowadays are not used in Tagalog text. In this case, <gútom> (hunger) and <gutóm> (hungry) are not the same. However, context usually tells one where the accents are. Some Tagalog authors put accents only on unusual words, to float the word out of subtlety. However, some authors do let the reader do all the guess work. In English, there exist words like <prótest> (noun) and <protést> (verb).
