si quelqu'un a une idée pour tourner la phrase sans utiliser le mot 'espèce', ce serait plus proche de la phrase originale. Mais le sens demeure le même...

et en l'occurence, le japonais fait référence aux espèces, ou seulement aux animaux en tant que groupes ?

Dans ce cas-ci, la phrase sous-entend que les 2 espèces sont différents.

parce que pour rapprocher de l'anglais on pourrait dire "les souris se distinguent des rats" ou l'inverse, mais alors on s'éloigne du japonais...
Moi je trouve votre traduction correcte comme ça, donc.
