This sentence is linked to the とまる reading of 止まる. I know that in some cases 止まる can be read やまる colloquially to mean "to cease; to stop; to be over". Can one of our Japanese native speakers look over the 止まる sentences and point out any where やまる would be better? You can see the list at http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~...8%A4%DE%A4%EB_ (There are only 116 of them.... 8-)} )

JimBreen JimBreen June 17, 2013 June 17, 2013 at 3:31:01 AM UTC link Permalink

Indeed, but since we have about 160 sentences with 止まる already (incl. some for the とどまる reading), it would be easier/better if some of the existing ones were reindexed (which is a lot easier than completely indexing news sentences.)

Thanks!

大辞林 says it's "俗", and doesn't mention any particular 弁. I have tagged it "col" for "colloquial".

It would be nice to have one example sentence where 止まる is read やまる, even if it is very slangy.

@tommy_san

http://www.weblio.jp/content/%E...81%BE%E3%82%8B

If it's the first time bunbuku has heard of the やまる 読み方 of 止まる, I'll forget about it. Thanks for the feedback.

JimBreen JimBreen June 17, 2013 June 17, 2013 at 12:56:49 PM UTC link Permalink

I don't think the やめる case is worth pursuing.

Sorry, in my haste I didn't see you referred to やめる instead of やまる. Yes a check of the 止める sentences would be very useful. The three lists are at:
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~...8%A4%E1%A4%EB_
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~...4%A4%E1%A4%EB_
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~...C9%A4%E1%A4%EB
The second is very long.

I have changed the index to やめる.

Changed to とめる.

That sentence (97961) was originally: "彼らはその計画を止めた。" In 2011 bunbuku changed it to "断念した" but the index has never been changed.

I have now changed the index to link to 断念. There is a backlog of about 1,600 sentences where the indices are not completely correct.

Thanks!
