This sentence is being used as an example for 落ちこぼれる, and the original English version, while not incorrect, did not really bring out the meaning.

JimBreen JimBreen October 19, 2014 October 19, 2014 at 1:52:47 AM UTC link Permalink

Science class(es)? I see that "学科の授業" occurs about 12,000 times in the Google Japanese n-gram corpus. I can see it being used in WWW pages, e.g. http://www.tokyo-fukushi.ac.jp/...stem/what.html has "でも、こども学科の授業は、先生やクラスメイトとひとつのテーマについて楽しく話し合うのが基本。"
Feel free to suggest either a better translation, or a replacement.

I agree that 学科 really means a subject in the abstract, and you need some form of modifier such as "好きな学科", "難しい学科", "こども学科", etc.

I think what possibly happened here is the original sentence was a mistake and should have been "科学の授業". How do you think making that substitution, or possibly "科学のクラス" would go?

tommy_san tommy_san October 20, 2014 October 20, 2014 at 10:18:48 AM UTC link Permalink

Thanks. I substituted 理科の授業 and made the verb 落ちこぼれそうです. I think that's a lot clearer (to me anyway.)
