@Pfirsichbaeumchen, was the original version of this sentence a good match for the Japanese?

To give you an idea, the German sentence is a very good match for the Japanese to be point of saying almost literally the same (if you leave out “ganz”, which can be taken as a German filler word).

Comparing the two versions of the English sentence, they both match in meaning, with the first being almost too simple and the second being somewhat complicated. Judging from the style, I think the Japanese was the translation and the English was the original.

This English sentence strikes me as unnatural. We would never say "severe educational influence"...the word "severe" connotes an extreme, whereas "educational influence" is a very mild and indirect phrase.

I added an alternative translation from the German sentence which I think is more natural here, "Through a strict upbringing..."

The Japanese, 厳しいしつけ, is more like "(strict) discipline."
It matches the original version of this sentence.

al_ex_an_der changed the English, then unlinked the French, but didn't unlink the Japanese. This may have been before TRANG had the guideline not to change correct sentences. Likely things like this is why she created that guideline.

See the Logs:

Discipline transformed the child.
added by an unknown member, date unknown

Due to severe educational influence the child became a wholly different person.

@JimBreen

This change likely means you need to change things with WWWJDIC.
I'd suggest unlinking the Japanese and then adding the original English back as a translation of the Japanese.

@CK
Thanks. I've done that. It's a good example of 厳しいしつけ, and already our preferred example for 別人.

I suspect that the Polish doesn't really match this.
(I also agree that this English sentence seems strange.)

Dzięki ostrej dyscyplinie to dziecko zmieniło się całkowicie.

It looks more like it might match "discipline."

Maybe it should be unlinked.

How about we change this sentence back to the original? If it's awkward/wrong/unnatural, there's no point in keeping it. Besides, he shouldn't have changed it in the first place.
