Is "let" present or past tense in this sentence?

I'm trying to think of a context where someone would really use this sentence.
It doesn't seem very likely.
I wouldn't adopt this sentence since it's not a good out-of-context sentence example.

However, something like the following would likely really be used.

We let the bird fly away.
