I'm a police officer by profession.

This doesn't match the Japanese.

The Japanese is more like "My job/occupation is ...."

I wonder about the other direct translations.

ber
Nekk xeddmeɣ d amsaltu.
hun
A foglalkozásom rendőr.
jpn
私の職業は警察官です。
por
Minha profissão é policial.
rus
Моя профессия - полицейский.
spa
Mi profesión es agente de policía.
tur
Benim mesleğim polis.
ukr
Я працюю поліцейським.

If the profession is to be specified, then "benim mesleğim polis" is not said in Turkish. Instead, when the person is asked, "What's your profession?", the name of the profession is directly said in response (e.g., polisim, doktorum, mühendisim).

However, if the sentence is to be formed as "benim mesleğim...", the rest of the sentence should not be "polis" but "polislik-tir". But it's not that common though.

The literal translation of "I'm a police officer by profession" is "Meslek olarak polis memuruyum". But nobody says that either.

In short, for a sentence of this nature, I would say "mesleğim polislik", instead of "benim mesleğim polis".

"Polis olarak çalışıyorum"
"Polislik yapıyorum"
"Polisim"
"Polis memuruyum"

In English, too, one would generally not say "My job/occupation is", especially when one has just been asked about one's job. One would say simply "I'm a police officer." But if, for instance, someone said "Tell you about yourself", and you wanted to emphasize that you were starting by talking about your job, you could say "I'm a police officer by profession." That's the context in which I imagine this sentence being said.

Indeed, how would one finish the sentence "My job/occupation is..." in this particular case? You can't say any of the following:

*My occupation is policeman.
*My occupation is a policeman.
*My occupation is police officer.
*My occupation is a police officer.
*My occupation is police.

In Portuguese, "policial" can be either an adjective or noun. But in English, we don't have this flexibility, so we need to restructure the sentence.
