Have adopted. "I went to the store before." sounds awkward, at best incomplete, i.e. "before going to work", etc. Could the intended meaning have been "I have been to the store before." I.e. on some prior occasion, I have been to the store. As a standalone sentence it is more natural.

I think "the store" is not very accurate. "そのお店" sounds to me like it's referring to a specific store, so if that is the case, it would be better translated as "I have been to that store before." However, if the intention was to refer to a store, in general, then it would be more natural to say "I went to the store already." or "I went to the store earlier." Also, looking at the placement of the commas, I wonder if "Earlier, I went to that store." would also be a natural translation?
