The sentence is correct, but I didn't fully understand it until I saw the other translations. This is because English is ambiguous. Here the sentence probably means, "I played against the champion." The same sentence would be valid in another context:
You were in the school play? What role did you play? I played the champion.
In any case they don't want you to modify an English sentence where the Japanese is also an orphan sentence.

Nein Pfirsichbaeumchen☺ Polish, Russian and Esperanto all use a preposition here. I don't like ambiguous sentences even if they are current English. Did you know that 10@ of airplane crashes occur because somebody misunderstood an English sentence?

I'm reverting this back to the original sentence which was OK and also not ambiguous.
