Question:
Does "the cinema" mean the same as "movies"?
Or does it mean "movie theater"?
If it only means the latter, then the Japanese should be unlinked.
Answer:
It most often means "films" in general, but it can also mean "the cinema experience", i.e. the whole experience of going to see a film at a cinema.
This sentence can also mean that the person speaking is fond of a particular cinema, e.g. "There's not much to like in our town, but I am fond of the cinema."
