Two issues with this sentence:

(1) It should really be "on a trip" rather than "on trip". Hence, I'm changing the tag to "@change".

(2) Even if that change were made, the sentence wouldn't make sense from a logical point of view. Wouldn't the speaker know whether s/he spent all of his/her time on a trip?

What does the Japanese say?

I changed it. What do you think?

たとえ doesn’t mean ‘example’ here, but ‘even if’. However, since the Japanese sentence has no owner, it should not be trusted. It seems a bit awkward to me, although I may be wrong.

Let’s wait for Tommy. ☺

I think it means or is supposed to mean: I spent not all, but more than three quarters of my summer vacation/holidays travelling.

I agree. Maybe we'd better leave this kind of sentence alone.

WestofEden WestofEden August 26, 2013 August 26, 2013 at 2:54:54 AM UTC link Permalink

Is it awkward in Japanese also? Thanks for the explanation btw.

I unlinked this sentence from the Japanese so that we have the freedom to make this one able to stand on its own without its having to be consistent with a possibly faulty model. Currently, this sentence has some issues (including a typo: "tough" where "though" was intended).

How about this? "I spent three-quarters of my summer vacations traveling." It's correct, it's straightforward, and it doesn't leave anyone puzzled.

For reference, the Japanese is http://tatoeba.org/eng/sentences/show/158060 .

Please don't unlink sentences without asking anyone. I'm not saying this was the best sentence, but I might have corrected it if Tommy had said that the Japanese was natural. I don't see what you're adding here.

I thought I explained myself above, but I'll write you a separate note anyway.

still needs "tough" -> "though"

WestofEden WestofEden September 8, 2013 September 8, 2013 at 12:52:33 AM UTC link Permalink

I guess there's no point in having this sentence if it's not going to be linked to the Japanese.

It can remain since it has a Turkish translation :)

WestofEden WestofEden September 8, 2013 September 8, 2013 at 12:59:04 AM UTC link Permalink

I don't see it! But I'll leave it like that.

WestofEden WestofEden September 8, 2013 September 8, 2013 at 1:00:26 AM UTC link Permalink

Sorry, I had changed my settings, now I see it. You translated the latest version of the sentence, so that's perfect.

I spent more than three-fourths, if not all, of my summer holidays on trip.

Taking my summer vacations as an example, even tough that's not all of them, I did spend more that three-quarters of them traveling.
