@sundown "into" implies that the movement starts outside the river, doesn't it? (E.g. jumping from a bridge.) I don't think it matches "Ich tauchte im Fluss." which is more like "I was diving in the river."

Ah, I've just realised that the preposition is dative. Unlinked, thank you. Would "Ich tauchte in den Fluss." match?

And does "Ich tauchte im Fluss." refer to something like scuba diving?

Yeah, "Ich tauchte im Fluss." could refer to scuba diving, though I think scuba equipment would be overkill for most German rivers.
