"Front glass" is not a natural description for what must mean the front windshield. Is "front glass" okay in some other part of the English speaking world than the USA?
Hmm... "front windshield" does seem redundant. We do say it though. But we also say just "windshield" as your intuition suggests. I think it's better to leave it as it is now because the original sentence was explicit. As it is now, it corrects the original error ("front glass") but retains the specificity as to which windshield. (Yes, the rear window is sometimes called the rear windshield. I don't know why.)
Wouldn't it be more natural to just say "windshield?"
The Japanese word for "windshield" is based on the English "front glass" (フロントガラス) which is why the original mistakenly said "front glass."
The glass that shields the wind is the one in front. We don't have "side" windshields for cars, do we?
Also somewhat unnatural to me is the "of a car" construction, since we know that we're speaking of a specific car. How about this instead?
The car's windshield was smashed to pieces.
