The word "lay" is the past tense of the verb "lie" when "lie" has this meaning.
You just unlinked this one so I was right: the original Japanese was present tense ;-P
Actually, the "original" Japanese sentence was in the past tense. :-)

Anyway no doubt this one actually appeared as a translation of a present-tense Japanese sentence, that's why I asked. Someone should have been more carefully when linking lol
The person who wrote that Japanese sentence mistranslated. This happens from time to time.
Apart from the number itself, is there a way to know if two sentences are direct translations or a link of independent sentences made by somebody?
The first item in our FAQ mentions that indirect links are in gray.
