This should not be linked with "I got lost" (past tense), as the correct translation is "I am lost" (present tense).

Not necessarily. "Ich habe mich verlaufen" can refer to the past.
And couldn't you say in English "I got lost", meaning that now you "are lost"?

Okay, sorry, thanks for that! And for the English "I got lost" does not necessarily mean that you are lost now, but I understand your point.
