Why the change? Such a comma is context-dependent. This sentence arrived as a pair with "数分後に電話が鳴った。" from the Tanaka Corpus, and I don't think it's needed there. In fact in my BrE style it feels wrong. I know AmE tends to have commas more often.
If it stays I'd be tempted to add a non-comma version to keep the original pair.
