I disagree with this translation of 彼が言ったことを覚えている。.
が marks 彼 as the one who is doing or being something. if it had said 彼の it would be a possesive and it would indeed mean 'the thing said by him'
but why? "I remember what he said" means pretty much the same as "I remember the thing that he said", doesn't it?

「の」にしても同じことです。「が」と「の」はともに、名詞にかかる節の中の主語を示す言葉です。(所有の「の」ではありません。)
