Was the sentence really absolutely wrong? I learned the pattern "think O C" at school.

I took the liberty to attach the 'unusual wording' tag here because it very clearly is that, isn't it?
You don't find too many examples of "/think/ X Y" compared to "/think/ X /be/ Y", so I guess it's antiquated/literary usage, and since "do you think it a bad thing" and "do you think it's a bad thing" are so close, I suppose people abandoned the former phrasing altogether — makes sense.

I am so much with you on this, friend!
I advocate strong descriptivism, that is allowing all sorts of sentences as long as they are at all usable, but people certainly should be able to know what is common and what isn't, to make a difference between sentences you can always rely on and sentences that may/would fit on particular occasions but likely not elsewhere.
