How common is "read" in this context nowadays?

It's formal. I think it's fair to say its use is on the wane. So in short: not very. But still, you will come across it now and then in certain (formal, academic, bookish) contexts.

That's my impression of it. :)

In everyday Tamaziɣt, we use "ɣer" (to read) with two meanings: to read and to study, although we now have the verb "zrew" which literally means to study.
