Many marriages, however, break down — perhaps as many as one in three or one in two. In the above sentence, I would construe the word "goes" as equivalent to the plural noun "attempts". If he has married three times, we can assume that his first two attempts were unsuccessful.

Yes, it is, @Ooneykcall. Perhaps I should have noted that the phrase "have a go at" is chiefly British usage, though it is readily understood by U.S., Canadian and Australian speakers as well.
