I am troubled by the German translation, »Er soll reich sein.« My German is too rudimentary for me to write this comment in German--which means it may make no sense.
He is said to be rich = People think he is rich and talk about him as a rich man.
He should be rich = He ought to be rich (presumably because there are good reasons, e.g., because he's smart and hard-working).
What troubles me is that this is how I should translate »Er soll reich sein« into English.
The german translation is okay! It's exactly the meaning of "People think he is rich and talk about him as a rich man." -
He ought to be rich = "Er sollte reich sein (,weil...,/ ,aber...).
Wonderful. Thank you very much.
