Whose blood? His own or the child's?
Sorry, this just might be a weakness of the English language.
It is a weakness of the English language, but this sentence is pretty clear cut. It makes a lot more sense if 'he' / 'his' is the same person.
Right, it's clear from the context. I guess it would just sound more natural with either "giving him his blood" or "giving blood", but, well... those are minor details.
