This sentence was part of the original corpus and it's fine without the comma. You use a comma if "but" separates two independent clauses, which means that the clause has to have a subject and a verb. In this sentence "but couldn't find it" doesn't have a subject. You might want to put an alternate sentence; "I searched high and low for my lighter, but I couldn't find it."
(here the"I" is repeated)
