I understand this sentence as he is so much interested about the scene, that he forgets to breathe. If I am right, then on this page there are sentences saying the opposite: he watched the scene without much interest...
    Am I right?
(I beg pardon for my poor English)

It seems that among the direct translations only the French sentence is out of line (in that it says the opposite). I would suggest separating it (but I probably should not comment on English sentences).
