Fruit is correct.

You could also use "fruits". I think both are acceptable.

a) You don't change a correct sentence.
b) Fruit is a 'non-count' noun. There are occasions where a plural is preferable or required, but this isn't one of them.

a) Sorry. I didn't realize that it wasn't his sentence to begin with.

b) Why wouldn't this be one of them? Google has over 8 million results for "fruits and vegetables", so it can be, and certainly is, used as a count noun.

b) may have been shaded by my personal impressions on the matter but 'Fruits' is generally used as a plural when the emphasis is on reference to multiple species. Same as fishes.

Many fishes migrate back to their birth place to mate.
(fishes = species of fish)

The fisherman caught many fish that day.

Good point. Haven't thought of it that way.
