Magnets (without the article) [?]

AlanF_US AlanF_US February 5, 2024 February 5, 2024 at 12:25:26 AM UTC link Permalink

The sentence would be valid with or without the article, but the meaning would differ. It was added as a translation of a Japanese sentence. I'll tag some Japanese speakers to see what they have to say about which version, or both, would match:

@small_snow
@Pfirsichbaeumchen
@CK
@KK_kaku_

The German translation has a definite article, but the Esperanto doesn't, even though Esperanto as a language does have a definite article. Thus, at least one of those translations will need to be changed and/or relinked.

@AlanF_US
The Japanese sounds like they're talking about all magnets(/in general), not specific magnets to me.

However, I feel that it means specific magnets depending on the context, so I think the link is OK as it is. Of course, you can change the English.

If we're talking about specific magnets, how about "These magnets"?

If it is changed to "These magnets", it will no longer match the Japanese. In that case, it would be better to unlink Japanese.

"The magnets" does indicate specificity. Let's leave the sentence as it is. Thanks, everyone.

The magnets, of course, have a magnetic field around them.
