    included punctuation to clarify the sentence.

    I don't think it matches the Japanese.
    in which いわゆる modifies 戦争, nor do I think it has the feeling of the interjection "as it were"

    Are you a native Japanese speaker Shiawase? I feel that the Japanese sentence could be read like this: 彼等はいわゆる、戦争の犠牲者だ。
