yes, but this also can be correct for some cases, I guess

To tell the truth, I can hardly imagine context where this sentence would sound natural.

I actually did: [#3393770]

@ sharptoothed
For example,
What is life? It is a short walk before eternal sleep.
Что есть жизнь? Это короткая прогулка перед вечным сном.

Это пример использования словосочетания "это короткая прогулка", а не предложения "Это короткая прогулка". :-)

Что есть жизнь? Это короткая прогулка. Впереди нас ждёт только вечный сон.

Do you seriously think that people who want to know how to say "It's a short walk." in Russian want to see this sentence? Don't you think it'd mislead us to think that we can use this sentence when we want to say you can easily walk there?

odexed odexed July 24, 2014 July 24, 2014 at 9:50:28 AM UTC link Permalink

@tommy_san We already have the russian sentence which perfectly corresponds to the situation when we are talking about the distance between two points. But what if we are talking about walking itself as an exercise? This is another possible context.

I went to the park. It was a short walk - Я отправился в парк. Это была короткая прогулка.

tommy_san tommy_san July 24, 2014 July 24, 2014 at 10:00:25 AM UTC link Permalink

The point is not whether the translation is possible or not. It's whether it's useful for the learners. I don't think it's a good idea to list every possible translation. When a translation works only in some limited contexts, we'd better name the context inside the sentence.

odexed odexed July 24, 2014 July 24, 2014 at 10:01:41 AM UTC link Permalink

Then, just delete this one.

If you are so strict, you should put more attention to the sentences like this one [#477827] which are totally unuseful but make a bad example to other people.

It depends on whether "It's a short walk" could be used in the same context as this Russian translation (duration of a walk). "Это короткая прогулка" itself is a valid sentence and, as we just determined, can sound natural in some contexts. Though it's more likely to see this phrase in extended sentences, not on its own.

tommy_san tommy_san July 24, 2014 July 24, 2014 at 10:36:31 AM UTC link Permalink

I'd suggest unlinking it from the English and making it longer.

odexed odexed July 24, 2014 July 24, 2014 at 10:42:24 AM UTC link Permalink

In my opinion this sentence shouldn't be deleted nor unlinked since I'd use this in some contexts. English sentence is too concise to have just one correct translation.

For those who don't like this sentence: I can suggest not only this Russian sentence means "a short hiking", but also Italian and perhaps Portugal. At least, I used google search for Italian and I didn't find something similar to "it's not far from here". But I can't be absolutely sure, so I want to know Guybrush88's opinion, if "una breve passeggiata" can be used as "it's not far from here" or not.

@CK
"I probably shouldn't use this sentence with any of my projects?"

What about this particular sentence, it's not worse nor better, than many other Russian sentences on Tatoeba, in my opinion. It just means "it's a short hiking", not "it's not far from here". If your English sentence can be used in this context (I think, it can), so it's an accetable translation. Such short sentences often sounds more natural with emphasizing words like "just" (that's the reason some people consider it less than natural, in my opinion). I can suggest the context (though I doubt it can be useful for you if you don't speak Russian at all) "Я слишком устал, чтобы идти на экскурсию" - "Не переживай, это не потребует много сил. Я бы даже не назвал это экскурсией. Это короткая прогулка."
In general it seems as a good idea only making projects in the languages, you know well enough. In that case you could be sure about the quality of your projects.
