I don't think this matches with the Japanese

nickyeow nickyeow April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:05:24 AM UTC link Permalink

The Japanese says "Everyone knows he's still alive", right?

I don't actually speak Japanese very well; I shouldn't have been translating from Japanese. But I guess the damage is done.

DJ_Saidez DJ_Saidez April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:07:13 AM UTC link Permalink

Well the Japanese is from Tanaka Corpus, and most unadopted sentences from there should be taken with a grain of salt

What's wrong with the Japanese sentence?

DJ_Saidez DJ_Saidez April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:21:10 AM UTC link Permalink

I don't know since I'm not a native, but when Tanaka Corpus sentences were imported there were a lot of mistakes in many of them, so natives are trying to check and fix them
There's probably nothing wrong with it, but until a native adopts it, we can't know for sure

Also when you edited the sentence it didn't match with the Spanish anymore (it says "no one" instead of "everyone") so I added it again
#9961230
Could you adopt it?

nickyeow nickyeow April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:23:39 AM UTC link Permalink

The original sentence contained a mistake often made by Cantonese speakers. I've now corrected the mistake, but the sentence still means "Everyone knows he's still alive".

I'm sorry for the confusion this has caused.

DJ_Saidez DJ_Saidez April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:29:37 AM UTC link Permalink

No it's fine I think I'm making it worse
A Spanish speaker translated the original sentence, and the Spanish translation says "No one knew he was alive"
Would the original sentence match with that, or should I delete it?

If you were in fact translating from English and not from Japanese, then I can unlink the Japanese for you, and link your sentence to the English.

nickyeow nickyeow April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:33:43 AM UTC link Permalink

That would be a mistranslation then. You should probably just delete the Chinese sentence you just added.

nickyeow nickyeow April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:38:14 AM UTC link Permalink

CK, that sounds reasonable to me.

DJ_Saidez DJ_Saidez April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:39:28 AM UTC link Permalink

Ok, thanks for the clarification

nickyeow nickyeow April 16, 2021 April 16, 2021 at 4:39:34 AM UTC link Permalink

Wow, has it been 12 years already???

Done.
