I don't want a girlfriend, I want to love.
?
Maybe ...
It's not that I want to have a girlfriend. (It's just that) I want to be in love.
It's a contrast between having and being (if I understand right what I meant when I wrote this).
I think I got your idea, Tommy. Can we also assume that you meant that having a girlfriend doesn't mean being in love and being in love is just what our hero wants?
I think you're right.
Another logical possibility would be that he wants to be in love with someone, but he's not interested in a steady relationship.
