I think vivid is not bildhaft
vivid is lebendig or schnell.
Am I wrong?

I understand it means that "he" speaks in an expressive (literally "picture-painting") way.

Ehm, not really... what I'm trying to say is that "he" uses many metaphors and that it is easy to imagine his explanations as he draws pictures with words. Hard to explain...

My suggestion: He speaks so vividly. I think it is quite common expression. Only, is it a good translation?
